Kids are Big Winners at 8th Annual Spring Trout Derby at Oasis State Park
Anglers Prepare to Make a Big Catch This Summer
Portales, NM – More than 200 people attended the 8th Annual Spring Trout Derby on Saturday, March 25, 2017, hosted by Friends of Oasis State Park. Certain trout were tagged and redeemed for prize money ranging from $10 to $100.
"Kids were the big winners at this derby", said Jim Whary, Park Manager. "The weather was beautiful and it was a great time for families to come out and enjoy the day fishing," he added.
During the Oasis Fishing Derby, Kelsey F. Prince, Miss Oasis 2017, made a special guest appearance. She is a lifelong Portales resident and outdoors enthusiast. Prince said she chose Miss Oasis as her title and will be competing in the Miss New Mexico Pageant in June. As Miss Oasis, she has chosen to assist with and promote Oasis State Park's special events.

Cimarron Canyon State Park's 25th Annual Children's Fishing Derby, May 13th. The first 100 kids to register will receive a surprise goody bag, free t-shirts and snacks. Smokey Bear will make a guest appearance at 11 a.m., and Raptor Inc. Birds of Prey will host a bird program at 1:30 p.m. It's a free event to participate, but park day use fees apply and are only $5 per vehicle. Sugarite Canyon State Park's Nine-Day Fishing Derby, May 27th through June 4th. This is a Signature Event for the Park each year. Catch a tagged fish for a chance at up to $1,000 cash! Registration is $10 and includes a chance at a $3,000 boat on a trailer. The event includes daily door prizes. This derby takes place at Lake Maloya located in Sugarite Canyon State Park, which is located six miles northeast of Raton along State Highways 72 and 526.
Clayton Lake State Park Fishing Derby, June 10th and 11th. This is the 17th Annual Fishing Derby hosted by the Friends of Clayton Lake State Park and the Clayton-Union County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. This is a weekend filled with fishing, food and fun! The event includes daily activities for kids such as a dinosaur egg hunt, and a hotdog eating contest. This derby takes place from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 10th and 8 a.m. to noon on Sunday, June 11th. Three grand-prize drawings will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday. There is a $15.00 registration fee per person and sign-in begins at 6 a.m. at the Park's group shelter. Park day use entrance fees will be waived for Fishing Derby entrants, all other park fees apply.
