I am strong, smart and bold: MARIE WATSON
"When my family and I moved from New Mexico from Maryland, I was only eight years old and starting the third grade. Even though I felt out of place, participating in Girls Inc. activities helped me feel more comfortable in my surroundings. The counselors at Girls Inc. were not only supportive of me and my needs but were also a trusted resource to turn to. They listened and encouraged me to be myself, despite the differences, and I learned that I AM strong, smart and bold!"
"The activities we engaged in ranged from team building exercises, planting gardens, cooking, painting murals, playing games, working with the Santa Fe Mountain Center, and collaborating with the staff and girls from the other Girls Inc. location in town. The partnership with the Santa Fe Mountain Center, was especially rewarding because it taught us to work together, and challenged us to trust ourselves and our peers. It offered us new opportunities to explore our physical and mental strength through activities including rock climbing, rope courses, hiking, and others. Through the Mountain Center, we were also able to get to know one another on a more personal level, by participating in sleepovers and bonding outside of our daily programs."
"The process of discovering yourself is never-ending and I am still looking for answers. However, I feel that because of these Girls Inc. experiences, I am able to see the bigger picture and I also respect that cultural differences exist, every individual is unique, and learning from one another is essential to our growth."
