What Happens Before, During and After Treatment
Once a diagnosis of cancer is made, patients talk with their primary care physician along with several cancer specialists, such as a surgeon, a medical oncologist and a radiation oncologist, to discuss treatment options. These specialists will work together to help recommend the best treatment.
In some cases, cancer will need to be treated by using more than one type of treatment. For example, a patient with breast cancer might have surgery to remove the tumor by a surgeon, then have radiation therapy to destroy any remaining cancer cells in or near the breast by a radiation oncologist. This may be followed by chemotherapy by a medical oncologist to destroy cancer cells that have traveled to other parts of the body.
The CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center delivers compassionate, comprehensive, state-of-the-art care to Northern New Mexico cancer patients.
The CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Cancer Center features two Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) machines that provides up-to-the minute views of tumors at the start of every radiation treatment. This translates to greater accuracy in directing the radiation, improving outcomes and reducing radiation side effects.
The Cancer Center’s VolumetricModulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) technology provides another way to potentially spare healthy tissue surrounding the treatment area and throughout the patient’s body.
The Varian (Linac) technology delivers precise doses of radiation, targeting the treatment area.
Philips Pinnacle provides planning software that allows providers to map out radiation treatment for various tumors and disease.
Elekta Mosaiq technology generates accurate records of the treatment and allows providers to verify that treatment was delivered to the correct areas.
The center offers Wellness Classes for past and present patients, including classes for healthy cooking, spirituality programs, acupuncture and alternative medicine, yoga and movement classes. Social services, palliative care and improved patient support services are now available.
Our facility includes a newly remodeled chemotherapy suite. Twenty-one separately screened infusion chairs with an included chair for a guest and two private infusion areas are available for our patients. The pharmacy is located within the treatment suite.
